Winter Update
Winter Update at Alexander and Bonin is a group show with work by John Ahearn, Matthew Benedict, Carlos Bunga, Roman Cochet, Rita McBride, and Sylvia Plimack Mangold. The selection of works from this selection varied a lot in the subject and form of art, resulting in the incohesive outcome of the collection of work as a whole, especially John Ahearn’s plaster busts sculptures of people in their summer outfits in the midst of flat surface artworks. Therefore, it is only possible to review this exhibition by the artist. The two works that caught my eyes the most were both from Roman Coche. His painting Cosmic Horror showed three figures with hollowed eyes in front of a void and Pas long Feu depicts a world where constructs slowly break down and nature takes over as humans disappeared. Though not made apparent that he was using painting to imagine a world without humanity, there is an eerie feeling to the way he depicts the seeming normal subject that draws me in. Though this exhibition as a whole is underwhelming, it introduced me to an artist that fits my taste, and I can’t wait to see what Roman Cochet has to offer in the future.
